The closure of a pharmacy is bringing concerns to Township residents of an area seeing a future decline once again after being fixed up a decade ago. Walgreens has announced that the Harborcreek drug store on the corner of Buffalo Road and Nagle Road will be permanently closing down on April 10th after having issues with poor sales and fewer customers. This marks the 3rd pharmacy closure in the East Erie area after the Burton Heights CVS in East Erie closed last year, a long with the Your Hometown Pharmacy in Wesleyville. Leaving Rite Aid and the Giant Eagle Pharmacy as the only closest pharmacies to East Erie and Wesleyville, while the future of Rite Aid remains to be uncertain as the company continues to close stores due to the companies bankruptcy and lawsuits. Residents in Harborcreek are very concerned that the Buffalo Road Retail Corridor is beginning to decline again like it was in the past. “During the early 2000s, this area was so dead, the Eastway Plaza was nearly abandoned and struggling, there were a bunch of abandoned retail stores scattered all a long Buffalo Road and businesses were struggling, when all the redevelopment came in 2012 and 2014, we thought the area would be brought back to life, once Kmart closed and COVID happened, everything went down hill and started to leave Harborcreek once again, forcing us Eastside residents to travel further to the Westside and Upper Peach Street to shop.” says Amanda Bargielski of Harborcreek. “Harborcreek is the only area we can shop, it’s safe, everyone is so friendly and there isn’t much traffic like it is on Peach Street, seeing all these stores leave make me worried it’s heading the same direction it was 10-20 years ago.” says Reine Neal of East Erie. While most residents are very concerned with the Buffalo Road Retail Corridor’s further decline once again, Harborcreek Township supervisor, Tim May says they’ll make sure Buffalo Road won’t fall back into the same disrepair it did a decade ago. “The demolition of the former Kmart and Big Lots is just the start of new redevelopment opportunities and brand new progress we will see come to Harborcreek and Buffalo Road, as well as the new businesses that will be coming such as Starbucks about to open at the Giant Eagle Plaza and the future opening of Art’s Bakery down the road, shows that the Buffalo Road Retail Corridor is far from struggling, we are sad to see Walgreens leave and we are really hoping another tenant will take over it’s empty space.” says Tim May.
