Neighbors in the Diehl neighborhood of East Erie have been putting "We Love Diehl" signs outside their homes. The signs are to support the Diehl neighborhood as well as the Diehl Elementary School, with the back of the sign saying "We Love Erie Public Schools". These signs were given out for free last Wednesday at the Diehl Elementary School at 2327 Fairmount Parkway in Diehl, to receive the sign you had to be a resident of the Diehl neighborhood. Local community members are also working on fixing the Diehl neighborhood, a small neighborhood in East Erie located near Burton, Eastlawn Hills and Wesleyville. "The signs are just the start, we've been working with the City of Erie for years to help cut down the dead trees along the road verge on Fairmount Parkway, and plant new trees to make the neighborhood look more alive." says Darren Kulholski, a member of the Diehl-Eastlawn Hills Neighborhood Watch team. Other community members like the East Side Renaissance are hoping to receive grants and permission from the City of Erie to fix up broken sidewalks along Fairmount Parkway and Buffalo Road. "Most residents in Diehl don't have money to get their sidewalks repaired, nobody wants anybody to get hurt so we're helping them out the best we can." says Tim Shannon, executive director of East Side Renaissance. Other plans include revitalizing Buffalo Road to add new businesses from the 2100 block of Buffalo Road to the 2600 block of Buffalo Road, a new apartment building constructed at 2502 Buffalo Road, improvements to the East Lawn Plaza, and a City Park added at 2133 Fairmount Parkway. Community members are just waiting for permission and permited to be issues by the City of Erie, as well as residents permission for sidewalk repairs.
