 Police Chase Involving U-Haul Truck Ends in Crash in East Erie

The  U-Haul vehicle that was involved in a high-speed chase in Erie County on Monday was used to steal more than $17,000 worth of items from Tractor Supply Company in Summit Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Troopers started investigating the burglary Monday morning after learning multiple items were stolen from the fenced area beside the Tractor Supply store on Downs Drive in Summit Township overnight. Three youth ATVs, a go-kart, trimmer mower, two mini-bikes and a Toro 54" zero-turn mower with a total value of $17,279 were stolen, and the vehicle believed to be used in the burglary was a  U-Haul box truck, investigators said. The chase began after an Erie Police officer tried to pull over the U-Haul in the 400 block of East 26th Street near Parade Street in the Central Eastside and Marvintown neighborhood boundary lines in East Erie. The U-Haul then took off east bound on East 26th Street all the way to Broad Street where they turned right to go west on Buffalo Road in Burton Heights. Erie Police called for additional support as well as Pennsylvania State Troopers helping with the chase as well. The U-Haul took off on Buffalo Road through Erie, Wesleyville and Harborcreek Township where they then turned right to go south on Nagle Road in Harborcreek Township, at that point, the U-Haul was turning on different roads and basically going in circles. The chase finally came to an end when the U-Haul got back onto Buffalo Road and turned right to go north on McClelland Avenue in Diehl in East Erie. A Pennsylvania State Trooper then did a maneuver on the U-Haul where the vehicle then crashed into a set of construction barrels in the 1700 block of McClelland Avenue near East 17th Street in the Diehl neighborhood of East Erie. State Police said there were two people in the U-Haul. The passenger - Michano Johnson, 33, of Waterford - was taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment. The driver - John Smith, 42, of Waterford - was arrested. Smith was taken to the Erie County Prison on charges including fleeing and eluding police, persons not to possess a firearm, receiving stolen property, aggravated assault of law enforcement, recklessly endangering another person and numerous traffic violations. Johnson faces charges for receiving stolen property and drug paraphernalia.
