Neighbors and Community Members held a Meet-Up Vigil in the middle of Woodlawn Avenue and Cameron Road in the Burton neighborhood of East Erie today to have a talk about the recent spike of crime and shootings going on in the Burton neighborhood. “This neighborhood was once suburban country in the Southeast side of Erie, now it’s a dangerous nightmare and has been getting worse and worse, we’re all tired of it and we’re all working to fix Burton into what it once was.” says Johnathon Riley who’s lived in Burton since 1963. This meet-up occurred due to the fact there was a shootout on Saturday in the 1900 Block of Woodlawn Avenue in Burton which targeted a car, the car lost control and drove through Woodlawn Avenue Park and crashed into a neighbors garage in the 1900 Block of East 26th Street.  Witnesses and Erie Police say an unknown male ran at the vehicle, shot at the car firing 7 shots, then someone returned gunfire and shot at the male 12 times. Erie Police, House of Mercy and Burton-Burton Heights Neighborhood Watch Team we’re all at the meeting and some neighbors held signs which read “Stop the violence in Burton, Stop the violence in Erie” with it saying the same phrase but in Spanish on the bottom. House of Mercy and Burton-Burton Heights Neighborhood Watch Team will continue to fight the crime in Burton as well as recommending many neighbors to buy security cameras or doorbell cameras to prevent less crimes from happening. Erie Police are still investigating the shooting that happened on Woodlawn Avenue in Burton.
