Last night at around 8:50 PM. Erie Police responded to a large fight at the Veterans Memorial Stadium in the Marvintown neighborhood of East Erie. According to police, 15 to 20 people between the ages of 16 and 20 were fighting in the stands. A crowd of people started to leave the stands to head to the exit of the stadium to escape the fight and after doing so, gunshots were fired on East 26th Street near French Street in Marvintown in East Erie. Crowds of people began hiding for cover and some people started running towards State Street and West 26th Street near Glenwood Heights in Erie to escape gunshots and also take cover or hide. After the situation settled down, Erie Police had to pepper spray some of the people involved in the fight and so far made one arrest to a teenage girl who identified herself as a Erie High School student. Safety concerns after the Thursday night incident started to rise as more police security should be needed at Veterans Memorial Stadium and at Erie High School. “Erie High has a bad reputation for crime and fights as the school is a mixture of kids who live in low income neighborhoods and kids who live in wealthy areas of Erie, it’s just not a great mix at all and this school needs to start taking its safety more seriously as well as hiring more Erie Police officers to watch over inside and outside of the school.” says James Miller, a father of one of the students who attends Erie High School. James lives in Kingtown in East Erie and his son Brad is fearful of going to school and has no choice since it’s the only public high school in the City of Erie. “We don’t have enough money to move to Millcreek, Lawrence Park or Harborcreek and we can’t afford private schooling, I wish there was a way I can have my son go to a school and actually feel safe and not feel scared if he’s going to get robbed, shot, or even killed by one of the students at Erie High School.
